Folded Light

Project Type:

Kunsthalle: Non-Collecting Art Hall

Year:

2024

Location

Next to the Fayetteville Public Library

This project was developed through three distinct phases, each progressively refining architectural intent, structural understanding, and spatial interaction with light.

Phase One: Structural Analysis
The exploration began with an in-depth study of a barn, a prescribed colloquial structure, focusing particularly on its roof system. Through research, my partner and I examined its structural logic, function, and interaction with environmental elements such as light, water, and ventilation. Selecting a barn plan from LSU’s agricultural archives, we documented its floor plan and created a structural section, complemented by analytical diagrams to deepen our understanding of the building’s performance.

Phase Two: Form and Light Manipulation
Building upon the barn’s original form, the concept of "Folding" was employed to enhance spatial experiences through intentional light manipulation. The design explored solid-void relationships, capturing and directing light to create dynamic interior conditions. A specially designed light chute was integrated to funnel daylight strategically, while the introduction of a thicker wall condition yielded unexpected improvements in light quality and distribution. With the form established, a structural system was designed and seamlessly integrated to support the evolving spatial intent.

Phase Three: Site Integration and Architectural Development
With the conceptual form and structure refined, the building was positioned adjacent to the Fayetteville Library. The integration process involved extensive iterations—adjusting plans, sections, programmatic placement, and rescaling elements to ensure harmonious site interaction. Digital renderings and adaptations further reinforced spatial clarity and architectural cohesion, resulting in a final design that balances structure, light, and function.
