Cafe Portugal - Lighting Design
Project type
Lighting Design
Date
2025
Project Overview:
This semester-long project focused on developing a comprehensive understanding of lighting design, including daylighting principles, artificial lighting techniques, and lighting fixtures. The study began with an exploration of the fundamental aspects of light, human vision, and the circadian rhythm. Key concepts included Richard Kelley's three elements of lighting—Ambient Glow, Play of Brilliants, and Focus Glow—as well as different types of lighting such as area lighting, linear lighting, and spotlighting.
Methodology:
The project incorporated a multi-faceted approach to studying lighting quality, utilizing software-based analysis and digital renderings to evaluate lighting conditions based on material palettes. A thorough investigation of various luminaires and lighting systems was conducted, along with an in-depth exploration of advanced lighting techniques, including grazing, wall washing, spotlighting, flooding, cove lighting, linear lighting, and track lighting.
Geographical Context & Artistic Interpretation:
Given the specific location of Portugal, the study involved analyzing lighting characteristics influenced by the region’s environmental and architectural factors. The project concluded with an artistic expression of how light behaves within café spaces, applying learned principles to create evocative and functional lighting designs.
Project Outcome:
Through this exploration, a deeper understanding of lighting, lighting fixtures, and effective lighting techniques was achieved, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for practical applications in architectural and interior lighting design.
