Gradient City
Project Type:
Design and Technical Refinements
Year:
2023
This semester-long project, developed through multiple phases, explored the fundamental elements of architectural design—process, iteration, abstraction, scale, form, space, light, shadow, color, and atmosphere—all culminating in the creation and representation of a city below.
The project began with a structured grid, where lines—horizontal, vertical, or diagonal—were selectively pulled to generate planes that evolved into solid forms. By manipulating the heights of these solids, an engaging composition emerged, laying the foundation for an urban landscape. Introducing a limited palette of three tonal colors helped define the reading of light, further shaping the spatial character of the city.
Recognizing that a city requires essential structural elements to function, components such as **stairs, colonnades, tunnels, and bridges** were integrated to establish circulation and connectivity. Finally, atmosphere became a critical factor in crafting an environment that is universally interpretable—one that embodies the essence of place and spatial experience.
